How to Look Out for Bicyclists in Hampton

The beautiful Chesapeake Bay region attracts many beachgoers, vacationers, and residents interested in maximizing their time spent outdoors. When you're driving in Hampton, keep these tips in mind to avoid colliding with bicyclists and pedestrians:

  • Follow the speed limit, and go slower when approaching areas with a lot of foot traffic
  • Make a full stop at stop signs, and before turning right on a red light
  • Check for bicycles or pedestrians in your path before executing a turn
  • Give three feet or more when passing a bike
  • If you cannot give a bike three feet of space without running into another vehicle, slow down behind the cyclist and wait until it is safe to pass
  • Stay alert and watch the road. Do not text or use smartphone apps while driving.

When you're the one biking, be sure to always wear a helmet—more than half of all bicyclists killed in traffic were not wearing helmets—and use front and rear lights when riding at night.
